Customer Support Bulletin

CSB- 9810003

Number: CSB- 9810003

Released: 10/19/98

Subject: Accelar 1.1.X Runtime Image not compatible with ARU2 Host Modules

Product: Accelar 11xx and 12xx Chassis and Host Modules

Description:

This Customer Support Bulletin describes an incompatibility issue between the Accelar 1.1.X runtime image and Accelar host modules manufactured with the Address Resolution Unit Version 2 (ARU2) chipset.

Discussion:

Bay Networks recently began shipping Accelar host modules manufactured with the ARU2 chipset. The ARU2 chipset was introduced to support new features and enhancements to the Accelar product line - features such as Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP), IP Prefix Flow Filters, and IP Multicast Optimization all require ARU2 hardware.

Currently, the ARU2 hardware is only supported by the 1.3.X version of the runtime image; version 1.1.X of the runtime image will not initialize and/or recognize ARU2 host modules.

Resolution:

Accelar systems, with ARU2 host modules installed, must have the 1.3.X version of the runtime image loaded to support such devices. For instructions on upgrading the Accelar system runtime image, please reference the document entitled "Release Notes for the Accelar 1000 Series Products Software Release 1.3".

To identify if an ARU2 device has been installed into an Accelar system, users can visually inspect the host modules or query the system via the Command Line Interface (CLI).

To visually inspect a module, users should check the model number as printed on the faceplate of the unit. If the model number is appended with a "-A" label, the unit has ARU2 hardware installed. For example, the XLR1101SX module, with ARU2 hardware, will be labeled XLR1101SX-A.

Users can also determine the presence of ARU2 hardware via the CLI - systems with 1.1.X loaded will identify ARU2 devices as having AR0 or AR2. To use the CLI, execute the following command at the console prompt: sys show info. An example of the sys show info command is provided below:
