Description:

This Customer Support Bulletin will outline the changes in the Accelar Gigabit Ethernet modules, their operational requirements, and the process for End User Customers to order upgrade boards.

Gigabit Ethernet Modules shipped prior to June 15^th 1998 are affected by the upgrade. The module numbers are as follows:

Discussion:

Effective (07/15/98), Bay Networks will be shipping updated Accelar Gigabit Ethernet modules. These modules contain upgraded versions of the GMAC and GID ASICs (rev 4). In addition to other enhancements, these ASICs support IEEE 802.1Q VLAN tagging and auto negotiation as specified in the IEEE 802.3z standard. The new ASICs bring the board up to the IEEE 802.3z standard. Any further changes to the standard are not expected to require changes to the Accelar hardware. These ASIC versions require Accelar image version 1.1.1 or higher. (Please note that the upgraded ASICs are only supported by the 1.1.1 or higher software.) When booting, the switch does not check for interoperability issues between the Accelar image and the ASIC revisions. To check the revision of the ASICs or switching modules you can execute the "sys show info" command from the CLI. The sys show info command displays the revision of certain ASICs. Accelar Gigabit Ethernet modules based on the GMAC2 and GID3 ASIC require an upgrade. To check the revision of the Accelar Image, execute the "sys show sw" command. For additional details refer to the "Release Notes for the Accelar 1000 Series Products Software Release 1.1.1", and the "Release Notes for Accelar 1000 Series Gigabit Ethernet Modules" (June 98) documents that are located on the WEB at:

The Silicon Switch Fabric Card and the other types of switching modules do not have to be upgraded to support the upgraded Gigabit modules. Gigabit products shipping from mid June 1998 will already have the updated ASICs. The LinkSafe Gigabit Switching Modules and the 1050, 1051 and 1150 base units all ship with the upgraded ASICs – no upgrade is required for these.

This upgrade offer will be valid through 07/15/99.

Resolution:

Direct Bay customers and Internal Bay customers can contact the Bay Networks Logistics Department to order upgrade boards. If you acquired your product through a distributor, please contact your distributor for implementing the upgrade.

Required Information: Please make sure you have the following information available when phoning Customer Service Logistics to order your upgrade boards:

• Product Order Number (DJ14040XX) for each board you want upgraded
• Serial Number (SFLEXXXXXX) on each board you want upgraded
• Verify that the boards have versions of GID and GMAC that are older than version 4 – use the "sys show info" command to do this

For a visual indicator, when the board is held with the connectors facing you, the GIDs are the large chips in the center section of the board. Please note that 1 port boards have (2) GIDs and 2 port boards have (4) GIDs.

Please reference this CSB# (CSB-9807001) when placing your order.The Customer Service Representative will process your request, issue a Return Authorization Number (RA#)for your existing boards, and advise you of the expected shipment date for your upgrade boards. You will be shipped replacement boards. Upon receipt of the replacement boards, please use the return paperwork enclosed with your upgrade shipment to return the old boards.
